Supervisor Gavin Newsom and the city’s Department of Public Works have proposed an anti-graffiti ordinance that would give owners seven business days to clean up graffiti tags on their buildings or face a $500 fine. The director of the department will be allowed to extend the period an additional seven days if requested by phone, fax or letter. Notice of violations would be served by certified mail.
Supervisor Newsom has been criticized by building owners who contend that they are not the ones defacing their buildings and that the city’s police department and district attorney need to be more aggressive in their efforts to deal with graffiti vandals. Property owners have urged Supervisor Newsom, in this regard, to consider the difficulties and costs involved in eradicating graffiti from marble and other surfaces, especially on historic buildings.
Glass scratching graffiti has been exempted from the proposed ordinance, although it is expected to be addressed in another proposed ordinance to be introduced shortly.
